Joyful Lag BaOmer Celebrations Bring Light and Unity to Zhytomyr and Ashkelon

This year’s Lag BaOmer celebrations in both Zhytomyr, Ukraine, and Ashkelon, Israel, were filled with tremendous joy, unity, and Jewish pride, bringing smiles and hope to hundreds of children and families during challenging times.

In Zhytomyr, the Jewish community came together for a beautiful celebration honoring the legacy of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai. Children from the local Jewish school, community members, and families participated in a lively parade filled with music, dancing, Torah, and happiness. The streets were filled with the sound of songs and the excitement of children proudly carrying Jewish flags and signs promoting love, unity, and mitzvot.

The program included inspiring words about the importance of Ahavat Yisrael, interactive activities for the children, delicious food, and a festive bonfire symbolizing the light of Torah that Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai brought into the world. For many families living under the ongoing difficulties in Ukraine, the celebration provided a much-needed moment of warmth, strength, and togetherness.

At the same time, in Ashkelon, Israel, the children of the Alumim Children’s Center celebrated Lag BaOmer with incredible enthusiasm and joy. The children enjoyed a special day packed with games, music, dancing, sports activities, prizes, and a grand bonfire celebration. Staff members and volunteers worked tirelessly to create a meaningful and unforgettable experience for the children, many of whom come from difficult backgrounds and rely on the center as their safe and loving home.

The celebrations in Ashkelon also included inspiring stories about Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, songs of faith and joy, and moments of reflection on the importance of Jewish unity and resilience. Seeing the children smiling, laughing, and celebrating together was a powerful reminder of the strength of the Jewish spirit.

“These moments are so important for the children and families,” shared Rabbi Shlomo Wilhelm. “Lag BaOmer reminds us that even during difficult times, we must continue to spread light, joy, and love to one another.”

The events in both Zhytomyr and Ashkelon were made possible thanks to the generosity and partnership of supporters and friends around the world who continue to stand with the communities and help provide meaningful Jewish experiences, education, and care for vulnerable children and families.

As the flames of the Lag BaOmer bonfires lit up the night sky in Ukraine and Israel alike, they carried with them a powerful message of hope, faith, and the eternal strength of the Jewish people.
